The Process · ATX Attorneys

How the Referral Works

ATX Attorneys is an attorney referral service, not a law firm. We don't give legal advice. We connect Austin residents with the right attorneys — the ones who handle your specific type of case in Travis County — and let you take it from there.

01

You Tell Us What Happened

Fill out the contact form on this site — your name, phone or email, and a brief description of the legal situation. You don't need to know the legal category. "I was in a car accident and I think the other driver was at fault" is enough. "My employer fired me the week after I filed an HR complaint" is enough. We ask follow-up questions only if we need to route you to the right practice area.

The form is short on purpose. Legal situations are stressful, and we don't want you to have to summarize everything before you've spoken to an attorney. A brief description is enough to start the referral.

02

We Match You by Practice Area

We review your submission and match it against our Austin attorney network. The match is based on practice area and case type — not on who pays us more. A DWI case goes to a criminal defense attorney who regularly appears in Travis County courts. A wrongful termination case goes to an employment attorney who handles EEOC matters. An immigration petition goes to an attorney who works those cases, not a generalist.

We cover six core practice areas: personal injury, criminal defense, immigration, family law, estate planning, and employment law. If your matter falls outside these areas, we'll tell you and point you toward resources that can help — the State Bar of Texas Lawyer Referral Service, Lone Star Legal Aid, or the Travis County Bar Association, depending on your situation and income.

03

The Attorney Contacts You

An attorney from our network contacts you directly — by phone or email, based on your preference — typically within one business day. This is the attorney who would potentially represent you, not a scheduling coordinator or intake specialist. The initial contact is to understand your situation and schedule a consultation if the matter is within their practice.

Consultation format and fees vary by practice area. Personal injury attorneys offer free case evaluations and work on contingency — no fee unless you recover. Criminal defense and family law attorneys typically schedule a paid consultation. Employment law attorneys often provide free initial consultations for discrimination and wage theft matters. The attorney discloses their fee structure before the consultation, so there are no surprises.

04

You Decide — No Obligation

After consulting with the attorney, you decide whether to hire them. There is no obligation to hire anyone we refer. If the attorney isn't the right fit — different communication style, fee structure you can't accommodate, a scope mismatch — tell us and we'll try to make another match. We want you to end up with an attorney you're confident in, not just an attorney we happened to connect you with first.

If you hire the attorney, the relationship is entirely between you and them. ATX Attorneys is not a party to the representation, does not handle fees, and does not supervise the work. The attorney owes you the full duty of professional responsibility under the State Bar of Texas rules, not us.

Transparency

What ATX Attorneys Is — and Isn't

What we are

  • A free attorney referral service serving Austin and Travis County
  • A network organized by practice area and case type
  • A connection between you and attorneys who practice in the relevant area
  • Transparent about our partnership model — partner attorneys support the network, never the people seeking help
  • Willing to point you toward free legal aid if you qualify

What we are not

  • A law firm — we do not provide legal advice
  • A guarantor of attorney quality or case outcomes
  • A party to any attorney-client relationship
  • A substitute for consulting with a licensed attorney
  • A service that recommends attorneys based on who pays us more

Common Questions

Questions About the Process

You submit a brief description of your legal situation through our form. We review the submission and identify attorneys in our Austin network who practice in the relevant area and handle your specific type of case in Travis County. An attorney from the network contacts you directly — typically within one business day — to schedule a consultation. You evaluate the attorney, ask your questions, and decide whether to hire them. The referral service costs you nothing, and there is no obligation to hire the attorney we connect you with.
Most referrals result in attorney contact within one business day of submission. For urgent matters — an arraignment tomorrow, an immigration hearing next week, an EEOC deadline approaching — note the urgency in your form submission. We prioritize time-sensitive matters when routing.
Tell us. If the first attorney isn't right — the fee structure doesn't work, the communication style isn't a match, the attorney doesn't handle the specific sub-area of your case — contact us and we'll work on another match within the same practice area. We'd rather make a second referral than have you go without representation.
Attorneys in our network are licensed by the State Bar of Texas and practice actively in Austin and Travis County in their listed practice area. They have agreed to our network participation terms, which include responding to referrals within one business day and disclosing fee structures upfront. Our service is supported by partner attorneys who sponsor their practice categories. This does not influence which attorney we match you with — matching is based on practice area fit, not on who sponsors what.
